June 1 marked the beginning of a new Joplin Regional Artists Coalition exhibit at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. JRAC members that refreshened the rotating display were Koral Martin, photography, Janice Kinman, paintings, and Heather Grills, ceramics.
“I strongly feel that there is healing in the beauty of nature, and I’m glad to be able through my photography, to share that healing attribute with the patients, their families and staff in hospitals all around the country,” said Martin.
Koral Martin is a photographer drawn by the inherent beauty of nature. She sees it manifested in both the serenity of its order and the excitement of its chaos, its unending variety of the ever changing, and wonderful surprises, at every look, every step, along every path, and in every corner and crevice. Always having camera in hand, Martin sets out to tell nature’s stories that one may never see or grasp. Today, Martin is owner and operator of Koka Art Gallery of downtown Carthage, Mo. There, she combines her fascination and expertise of all aspects of digital photography with that of promoting local artwork.
“My palette is unlimited and I paint whatever speaks to me,” said Kinman. “I have painted on sawblades, weathered wood, wine bottles, metal and even the jawbone of a cow.“
Janice Kinman of Joplin embarked on an artistic adventure after raising two sons, retiring from the workforce and sadly becoming a widow. January 2005, she enrolled in four semesters of drawing and painting at MSSU. Kinman has been creating ‘whatever speaks to her’ ever since, mixing realism with a hint of impressionism. Kinman uses bold colors in her acrylic works to express her creativity, while watercolors reveal her soft side, like the medium itself. Kinman is active in the art community and has generously donated some of her works of art to local causes.
“The ability to record even a glimpse of the soul of a person or place is what separates one technically adept painting or sculpture from a more moving one,” said Grills.
Heather Grills is the executive director and owner of Phoenix Fired Art, a large, clay teaching studio and multi representational gallery on Main Street in Joplin. Grills works in a variety of mediums such as a clay and glass, creating mosaics, sculpture and ceramics. She finds inspiration by working from life. One example Grills has taken directly from her own life to create came from the experience of cancer. While in recovery for Paget’s Disease, a rare form of female skin cancer, flourished her “Paget’s Pots”. Grills markets her pots in the health industry to raise awareness about the importance of regular exams for early detection and prevention of Paget’s Disease.
The exhibit will run until Aug. 31, 2015. Artwork is for sale and viewers can come to the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, 320 E. 4th St to see it during business hours.
